Why summer is the best time to prepare your home for winter

When it comes time to preparing your house for the winter, you may think that you should do it only when the cold starts to kick in – but, as you may already know, the early bird gets the worm. That is why you should get prepared as quickly as possible, and think about getting started on your house during the summer time. That way you can still feel warm from the moment the first chilly breeze sets in.

Additional time

One of the best things about working during summer time is that you will get more sunlight. During the summer you will get more light and, therefore, more time to actually prepare your home in general. Not only will you feel more awake but will be able to spend more time on finalising your plans for the winter.

Testing out your windows

During the winter you need to make sure that your windows have the correct amount of glazing to keep the heat in and the cold out. Whether you have double glazed windows or UPVC windows, in summer you will be able to test your windows to see how much heat they can keep in.

Although you may not want to put the heating on, you can see how much natural heat is kept in your rooms by checking the temperature with a thermometer before and after you change the glazing. That way you can monitor how much will be lost during the winter months and how much heating you will have to use to compensate.

Check for drafts

As the weather will not be as bad during the summer time, it is the perfect set of months to check your house for winds and drafts. Check around your house near windows and doors. If you feel a breeze coming from them then it is time to patch them up.

The more cracks you fix, the more likely that you will be able to stay warm and save energy during the colder months. That means that you will be able to reduce all of your heating bills.

Boiler confidence

Do you really want to leave the heating of your house to chance? What will happen if you get to winter and find out that your boiler has broken down! You certainly do not want a cold house or to be forced to wait for a boiler repair person to come and see what the problem is. Instead, if you prepare your house for winter during the summer time, you can make sure that you always have a safety net in place.

Your home exterior

The last thing you want to do during the winter is be forced to go up on your roof to check for problems. Not only is it dangerous but you may find that the bad weather prevents you from making any necessary changes. If you look at your roof and your house’s exterior in summer, you can spot minor problems that could become worse during the winter. If you have them fixed during the summer time then you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
